..WATER FESTIVALS..

What is a Water Festival?

Water festivals are an interactive method of teaching students the fundamentals of water. In small groups, students progress through a series of hands-on stations exploring and learning. They take home a strong message about how water impacts their daily lives. All activities fit Massachusetts curriculum frameworks. Festivals are best suited to grades 4-6 - for one class, one grade or multiple grades.

  • Since 1999 sixty water festivals have been held on Cape Cod.
  • Over 10,000 students in grades k-6 have participated in Water Festivals.
  • Water festival activites have been featured at local community events such as:
    • "River Day" in Marstons Mills,
    • "Windmill Weekend" in Eastham
    • "Watershed Block Party" in Falmouth.

Comments from Students and Teachers.
From students:
“I learned to turn the water off when brushing your teeth.”
“I did not know that pollution could spread so fast and fertilizer was that bad. Now, I know why my mom buys organic food.”
“ I learned that if fertilizer gets in the pond. It will make the plants grow and the plants will take up all of the oxygen so the fish dies.”
“An aquifer is the thing that holds all our drinking water.”
“I think learning about water is important because you know not to litter and clean up after your dogs.”
From teachers:
“Fantastic job! Americorps volunteers showed expertise and amazing professionalism. All the activities were excellent. The activities that addressed the aquifer were particularly relevant to our situation on Cape Cod.”
“This was fantastic! We’d love to have it again next year .”
“The students in our school will be able to carry the information they learned into their everyday lives.”
